about

Another song about a badass woman from history; the Irish Pirate Queen Grace O'Malley. This wasn't a request, just a song I really wanted to write!

Grace O'Malley turned to piracy not to terrorize and steal from others, but to beat back the imperializing hand of Queen Elizabeth and protect her tribe. Resistance at its finest!

lyrics

Born with a red sky in the morning
Born with a salt sea on my tongue
Ma forbade my lust for sailing
Said I was a girl too young

So I cut my raven curls
Stole away to my father’s fleet
Swore his men would never find me
E’er we sailed far out to sea

Ro ho ho when the wind is raging
You will come to fear my name
Grace O’Malley rules these waters
You’d do well to heed my game

When my father came upon me
Stowed away like salted meat

Dire were the threats he promised
But his pride shone head to feet

So began my life of sailing
Raised the mast by my father’s side
Only when the queen betrayed us
Then the pirate’s trade I plied

Ro ho ho when the wind is raging
You will come to fear my name
Grace O’Malley rules these waters
You’d do well to heed my game

Every sailor whispers rumors
Britain’s bane on the night black sea

There’s no man on land or ocean
Who can tame the likes of me

Years I sailed beneath the black flag
Wearing victory as my crown
Like a storm I claim my conquest
They will lay their burdens down

I will live on into legend
Stories told from dusk till dawn
Grain of truth in all their yarning

Never was I Britain’s pawn

Ro ho ho when the wind is raging
You will come to fear my name
Grace O’Malley rules these waters
You’d do well to heed my game

Every sailor whispers rumors
Britain’s bane on the night black sea

There’s no man on land or ocean
Who can tame the likes of me
